BIGBANG earned “Quadruple Crown” at MAMA… EXO, PSY, 2NE1 also performed for MAMA

[일간스포츠=김진석 기자] BIGBANG earned quadruple crown at MAMA, including two grand prizes. EXO also earned quadruple crown, including one grand prize. The awarding of the two teams at this year’s MAMA has once again shown who the leading boy groups in today’s music scene in Korea are.
2015 “Mnet Asian Music Awards” (MAMA) was hosted on December 2 at Arena World Expo in Hong Kong, for as long as 300 minutes.
The hero of the awards was BIGBANG. BIGBANG received trophies in two of three grand prize categories: the best singer of the year and the best song of the year. Since BIGBANG released a number of hit songs including “LOSER”, “BAE BAE”, and “BANG BANG BANG” from May this year, BIGBANG was undeniably the best singer of the year. Plus, BIGBANG also received the best music video award and worldwide favorite artist award.
After receiving the grand prizes, BIGBANG said, “We thank you for giving us big love and support for such a long period of time. As time passes, every prize feels more and more precious for us. We’ll keep making music that can live up to your expectations.”
T.O.P said, “It’s been more than 10 years since our members gathered together to form BIGBANG. We’ve enjoyed so big love from fans and a lot of things have happened to us so far. I would like to express my deepest gratitude for our parents who always support us, as well as fans. BIGBANG members are people who feel happy when thinking about new music and new performance.”
EXO set a record of receiving the album of the year award at MAMA for three consecutive years. The biggest album sales volume for the past three years has always been the record of EXO. Plus, EXO also received the best male group of the year award. They looked even happier as their SM colleague Girls’ Generation received the best female group of the year award. EXO also received global fans’ choice award selected by votes from fans around the world, as well as best Asian style award.
After receiving those awards, EXO said, “We received four awards today. We really thank MAMA for giving us these precious prizes. We’ll prove the value of these awards you’ve given us with good performances on the stage. All these were possible thanks to Mr. Lee Soo-man and SM family, senior and junior colleague SM artists, all the staff members, as well as EXO members and our families. We really thank all of them. I would like to dedicate this award to EXO-Ls. Thank you!”
The best male singer award and best female singer award went to J.Y. Park and Taeyeon, respectively. J.Y. Park earned double crown, receiving the best male singer award as well as the best producer award given in the pre-awards which was newly created for this year’s MAMA. J.Y. Park said, “I believe that everyone in my company is my colleague. I thank all of them. I also thank my fans who have been supporting me for more than 20 years. There are too many precious people to mention here, for whom I’m so grateful. I’ll keep working hard to show you that dance singers can also have a long-term career.”
Taeyeon received the first award as a solo artist, not as a member of Girls’ Generation or TaeTiSeo. She expressed her gratitude by saying, “I thank all of you who listened to my song ‘I’ and especially Mr. Lee Soo-man and SM family who gave me an opportunity to be a singer. I also thank Girls’ Generation members for cheering me up and staff members for working hard to help me. Lastly, I really thank the members of my fan club, who give me a great energy to sing. I’ll reward your support for me with good music.”
The male and female rookie of the year awards were granted to iKON and TWICE, respectively. As an artist can receive the rookie award for just once in their lifetime, the award bears all the more significant meaning. iKON said, “We’re really grateful. We feel great to have his good opportunity to grow and evolve further as an artist for the years to come. Thank you for making this day unforgettable for us”. TWICE said, “We feel really nervous but honored to receive this great award as our first-ever award from a music festival. I can’t believe this and I have mixed feelings, but anyway, we’ll keep doing our best”.
The focus of interest for the 2015 MAMA was PSY’s comeback performance. PSY passionately performed “NAPAL BAJI” and “DADDY”, the double title tracks of his seventh full-length album. With PSY’s performance of “Gangnam Style” that united the world together back in 2012, MAMA marked a grand finale.
The surprise performance of 2NE1 was also impressive. 2NE1’s appearance in MAMA was kept secret to the very moment when they came upon the stage. CL’s solo performance was known in advance, but nobody knew about the performance by the complete team of 2NE1. They came upon the stage as 2NE1 in this year’s MAMA for the first time since early 2014. They were still powerful and charismatic. Their performance was perfect, to an extent that nobody would believe they have been absent from the music scene for quite some time.
“MAMA,” a leading music festival in Asia organized by Mnet, has celebrated its 7th anniversary this year. Starting as “Mnet KM Music Video Festival” in 1999, it continued to evolve along with Korea’s music industry. Held in Korea for the first 10 years, the festival took place in Macao in 2010, in Singapore in 2011, and in Hong Kong from 2012 to 2015, establishing itself as one of the biggest music festivals in the world as well as a music award ceremony. This year, MAMA introduced the best producer, engineer, and performance planner’s awards, which are given to those who contributed to the development of the music industry in Asian countries.
